In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) once again failed to clinch the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) title, extending their 16-year-long drought. The 2023 IPL season unfolded with familiar hope and enthusiasm for RCB and their ardent fanbase, who chanted the famous slogan ‘Ee Sala Cup Namde’ (The cup is ours this year).

However, despite their valiant efforts, RCB’s dreams were shattered as Gujarat Titans (GT) snuffed out their playoff aspirations with a convincing six-wicket victory in the final league match of the season.

Virat Kohli’s remarkable back-to-back centuries, his seventh in the IPL, went in vain as Shubman Gill’s stellar knock overshadowed the King’s heroic efforts, leaving RCB in despair. Despite Mumbai Indians securing their playoff spot by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad and accumulating 16 points, RCB needed a victory against GT to surpass MI’s tally.

However, Gill’s unbeaten 104 off just 52 balls, featuring five fours and eight sixes, propelled GT to their 10th win and a total of 20 points.

Gill’s exceptional performance was crowned by his remarkable finishing skills, particularly in the crucial moments of the game. Notably, he dispatched Mohammed Siraj’s length ball into the stands in the 18th over before launching a monstrous six off a full toss from Harshal Patel in the penultimate over.

The final blow, a straight drive down the ground, triggered jubilation among the GT and MI squads, while leaving the RCB dugout in disbelief. Kohli, visibly upset, expressed his frustration by throwing a water bottle to the ground.

Nevertheless, RCB displayed unwavering spirit, with Kohli and captain Faf du Plessis delivering some stunning performances throughout the season.

Speaking after the match, du Plessis expressed his disappointment, acknowledging the strength of the team but ultimately falling short. He highlighted the need for a solid middle-order to finish games and acknowledged the absence of a consistent match-winner this season, unlike the previous year.

The hero of the match, Gill, showcased his batting prowess, elevating his game to new heights and earning the title of ‘Prince.’ His maturity, patience, and unwavering focus played a pivotal role in GT’s victory. But, as far as RCB fans are concerned, it’s another season of disapopintment.
