The police in Maharashtra`s Thane city returned stolen valuables worth Rs 9.35 crore, which were recovered in cases of thefts, robberies and other offences, an official said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.

The police returned stolen valuables in incidents of housebreaking, dacoity, robbery, theft, cheating, chain-snatching and other crimes in the divisions of Thane City, Bhiwandi and Wagle Estate were returned, Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Dr Mahesh Patil said, reported PTI.

Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre and other senior officials handed the stolen valuables over to complainants at a function held in Thane on Monday, reported PTI.

According to the police, the total value of the property returned was around Rs 9.35 crore, reported PTI.

The stolen items included Rs 1.07 crore cash, gold worth Rs 2.20 crore, and vehicles worth Rs 2.97 crore, among other goods, they said, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus here on Monday returned the stolen valuables worth Rs 18.35 lakh to commuters, an official said, reported PTI.

The valuables were seized in 15 cases of theft, and the accused were arrested from Nashik, Pune, Thane, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra over one month, the official said, reported PTI.

The GRP has recovered jewellery worth Rs 17 lakh, four laptops and nine mobile phones from the accused, he said, reported PTI.

The accused were arrested under sections 379 (theft) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code, the official said, reported PTI.

In another case, prompt action by the Mumbai police on a complaint filed at the cyber helpline led them to stop an unauthorised transaction of nearly Rs 3.70 crore from a total amount of Rs 4.56 crore lost by a person who was duped by online fraudsters, an official said, reported PTI.

The incident occurred on January 4 when the victim, a city resident, lost Rs 4.56 crore to cyber crooks. They had promised the victim attractive returns on stock investments, the official said on Monday, reported PTI.

The victim immediately filed a complaint with the Mumbai crime branch`s cyber police station and also alerted them on `1930` helpline, he said, reported PTI.

Cyber officials acted swiftly and coordinated with the bank`s nodal officer and retrieved Rs 3.67 crore by freezing the accounts used to transfer the money, he said, reported PTI.

In 2023, the Mumbai police managed to save Rs 26.48 crore lost to cyber fraudsters after victims dialled the helpline number, the official said, reported PTI.
