NEW DELHI: Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah on Friday stressed on strengthening Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) for the success of the cooperative movement.

Shah also pitched for more and more PACS to function as Common Service Centres (CSC) which are delivery points of government and public services for people in rural, semiurban and urban areas.
He was speaking at the inaugural function of launching of CSC by PACS at a national mega conclave here. The CSC is one of the flagship programmes under the Digital India mission to deliver public services. At present, there are over 5,20,000 CSCs functioning across the country. It is expected that delivery of CSC services through PACS in rural areas will not only increase employment opportunities but also speed up public service delivery.

So far, 17,176 PACS havebeen registered in CSC. “Coming on-board of more than 17,000 PACS in a short span of two months is a huge achievement,” said Shah while noting that about 6,670 of them have started functioning and the remaining would also start in the next 15 days.
“This will provide employment to 14,000 youths who will work to strengthen the rural economy,” he said, noting that over 300 small beneficiary schemes of central and state governments have already been integrated with CSC. He said soon all 95,000 PACS will be on-boarded to start CSC operation.
Shah said there can be no better means than PACS to deliver CSC services to the poorest of poor in villages and among the landless agricultural labourers and Dalit and tribal communities.
