Mumbai: Traffic cop rides pillion with injured 11-year-old to hospital
For the Das family, Constable Vikas Babar, 41, of the Bandra Traffic division is no less than a superhero. He went beyond his duty to get their 11-year-old girl, who was severely injured in an accident, to hospital on Saturday. He picked her up from the accident spot at Mahim and managed to stop a biker, with whose help he transported her through the heavy traffic to Bhabha Hospital. On Saturday around 5.30 pm, Constable Babar was the first traffic personnel to arrive at the Mahim Causeway where a family of four on a two-wheeler had dashed into a car when its driver suddenly braked.
All the family members were injured and Babar saw that the girl had sustained serious injuries. Babar immediately informed his colleagues about the accident and decided to get the girl medical attention as fast as he could. The Bandra police later registered an FIR against the car driver, Mrityunjay Kumar Yadav, and seized the vehicle. According to the police, Vishwajeet Das who is an Airforce officer, his wife Rumi, daughter Sushmita and son Aditya Kumar, were headed to Bandstand for a picnic when they met with the accident.

Constable Babar said, “The girl’s chin and jaw were seriously injured. Her teeth were damaged and lips were also severely injured. I spoke to her father who was also injured and he said he couldn’t move the lower half of his body. He couldn’t stand. Her mother was also hurt. So I told them I was taking the girl to a hospital and picked her up. I rushed with her onto the road and stopped a biker, and told him to take us to Bhabha hospital. As it was peak traffic time, it would be very difficult to reach the hospital quickly. So I asked him to ride on the wrong side and break all the signals. We reached Bhabha hospital and admitted the girl. She is out of danger now.”
