Mumbai, Thane and other adjoining areas on Monday afternoon witnessed dust storm and gusty winds in the city.

Meanwhile, the weather department had earlier predicted that light rains were very likely in Mumbai and its adjoining areas.

A green alert was issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for Mumbai. It said, “light rain/thunder showers were very likely on May 13.”

In a nowcast warning issued at 1600 hrs by the IMD Mumbai, the weather department said, “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and moderate to intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Thane and Satara during next 3-4 hours. Possibility of hail at isolated places.”

The IMD also issued a yellow alert for Thane and Palghar. It said, “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) at isolated places
were very likely.”

A similar yellow alert was issued for several parts of Maharashtra including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon for May 13. It said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur at isolated places.

Mumbai and its adjoining areas has been witnessing severe heat and hot weather conditions since April. On April 29, Mumbai recorded a temperature of 39.1 degree Celsius, marking the second-highest temperature for this season, following closely behind the peak of 39.7 degree Celsius.

An IMD official on Monday said that for Mumbai rain/thundershower possibility was indicated from 10 May onwards.

“These are gusty winds associated with thunderstorm clouds,” the official said.

Meanwhile, several Netizens shared videos of the dust storm and rain in Mumbai and adjoining areas including Thane.

A user wrote, “Dust storm accompanied by thunder and rain hits Badlapur, Bhiwandi, Kalyan. Visuals from Kalyan.”

Another user wrote, “Sand and Wind Storm in Airoli, Thane.”
