A 19-year-old student died after falling from the sixth-floor window of the Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah academy’s boys’ hostel in Marol under mysterious circumstances around 10.30 pm last Saturday. The MIDC police initiated an inquiry, following the registration of an accidental death report on the day of the incident. The crime branch has also joined the investigation.

Zain-Ul-Abideen, the student, allegedly fell from his hostel room window, after which he was rushed to Holy Family Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries, including a fractured thigh bone, and was declared dead around 1 am on Sunday. The police have recorded the statements of the parents and roommates to ascertain any unusual patterns or behaviours leading up to the incident.

The ongoing university exams have slightly hindered the process of obtaining statements from all roommates and other students. Satish Gaikwad, Sr PI of MIDC police station, said, “We have registered an ADR and are probing the matter.”

A Mumbai police officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the 4×4-foot window features a grill, and there is an open space of about one-and-a-half feet above it. The aperture is situated at a height of around three to four feet from the floor. Given these particulars, the officer raised the possibility of the student either climbing onto the window and falling or intentionally jumping, he said.

Based on the statements of his roommates, the deceased used to spend a lot of time alone and didn’t talk much with others. He had been studying at the academy for six years. Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah is a world-class Arabic academy. The Marol campus of the academy was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on February 10.
