The number of voters in Mumbai has dropped by 1.6 lakh as compared to 2019. According to the Election Commission (EC) electoral list, there are 96.49 lakh voters  registered to date, while in 2019 there were 98.1 lakh registered voters.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra, Shrikant Deshpande, announced that the updated electoral roll was published on Tuesday (January 23). As per the EC data, 72.17 lakh voters are registered in the suburbs and  24.43 lakh registered in the city area. Of these, 52.03 lakh were male (53 per cent), 44.43 lakh female voters (46 per cent) and 1,018 transgender.

As per 2019 data, there were 53.15 lakh (54 per cent) male voters and 45.01 lakh (45 per cent) female voters, along with 636 transgender voters. This indicates that while the number of transgender voters grew sharply, the number of male and female voters dropped by 1.12 lakh and 58,000, respectively.

The EC had published a draft voter list on October 27, 2023. As per the draft voter list, 96.4 lakh voters had registered. After publishing the list, a team of election commissioners started door-to-door visits to confirm voter identities and register new ones. The EC also made an appeal for new voters to register, after which a final list was published this week. “Every year, the EC publishes the voters` list in January. The number of voters falls due to permanent relocation, voter deaths and repeat registrations,” said an Election Commission official.
