An elderly woman died after being crushed under the wheels of a loaded truck carrying government ration in Vasai on Saturday. The accused has been identified as Taufiq Shamsuddin Ahmed. The 74-year-old deceased, Parvati Narayan, lived in Chennai and was a  retired  stenographer with a Central government office in Hyderabad. Narayan was in Vasai to meet her younger sister.

According to sources, she and her younger sister Laxmi Krishnan Iyer, 68, were walking along the road in Diwanman area of Vasai West, when the loaded truck, crushed her under the wheel, while it was taking sharp turn on a road bend. “We were on our way to buy vegetables. I was a little ahead and my sister was following me when the truck came from behind,” Iyer told mid-day.

Police sources said that Narayan was standing near a circle on the road, when the truck took a right turn. “She came under one of the right wheels of the vehicle and was crushed to death. She died on the spot.” Narayan had been in Vasai for the last one month. Her daughter lives in Chennai, and the granddaughter is currently studying law in London.

When contacted, Sampat Patil, the senior inspector of Manikpur police station said, “While turning on the bend, the driver didn’t see the elderly woman, and hit her. The incident is unfortunate.” He added, “We have seized the truck and arrested the driver. We have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the IPC and Motor Vehicle Act.”
