The Government Railway Police (GRP) of Kalyan have registered a case against unknown persons after they found explosives in two abandoned boxes at Kalyan railway station on Wednesday. The police said they found 54 detonators in the abandoned boxes on the platform. 

According to the police, around 11.30 am on Wednesday, a sweeper found the abandoned boxes on the railway station towards the west side. He informed the cops who reached the spot promptly. 

“Officials from GRP, dog squad and bomb detection squad reached the spot and checked the boxes. They spotted 54 detonators in the boxes; the detonator is an explosive material available in the market for industrial use. They are used with gelatin sticks for controlled blasts on construction or mining sites. We have seized the material and have started further investigating the matter,” said Manoj Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, GRP.

The police have formed a team to conduct a probe into the matter and understand why were the detonators left at the railway station. 

A police officer told mid-day, “We have formed a team to conduct a probe into the matter. With CCTV footage and other informers` assistance, we have begun gathering inputs to get leads in the case. Our officers are visiting shops across the city to identify who sold the detonators. We are investigating the case recognising all possible motives.”

The Kalyan GRP have booked unknown accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and those of the Explosives Act. Meanwhile, the deployment at railway station premises has been increased as a precautionary measure.
