In IPL 2023, most of the top contenders of the Purple Cap, the award given to the highest wicket-taker of the tournament, do not stand any more chance to win it. Four out of the top 10 bowlers in the competition for the award have seen their team getting eliminated in the league stage. As the situation stands right now, there are only six bowlers who can win the Purple Cap in IPL 2023.

Mohit Sharma (GT)

Nobody was interested in Mohit Sharma, and he was left unsold in 2021. Sharma, who had once won the Purple Cap in 2014, was used as a net bowler in 2022. He made a remarkable comeback in IPL 2023, showcasing his exceptional skills as a net bowler and now playing a pivotal role in the triumph of the Gujarat Titans. He has taken 17 wickets for 284 runs with an economy rate of 8.

Ravindra Jadeja (CSK)

One of the most dependable forces of MS Dhoni’s squad, Jadeja has taken 17 wickets for 375 runs with an economy of 7. He has taken three wickets twice in this tournament. “Sir” Jadeja will be a key player during the playoffs as well since CSK will play the first Qualifier against the Titans at home.

Tushar Deshpande (CSK)

The CSK pacer, who plays Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, has secured 20 wickets for 465 runs so far. With an economy rate of 9, he has been quite effective for MSD. Sunil Gavaskar earlier praised him for his death bowling. Deshpande’s standout performance came at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore when he recorded his best bowling figures of 3/45 against Faf du Plessis’ RCB.

Piyush Chawla (MI)

The seasoned Mumbai spinner has taken 20 wickets for 422 so far. However, he has been inconsistent. He did not manage to take any wickets in MI’s final league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and in the earlier match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He took only one in MI’s last match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). His best (3/22) came against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 11.

Rashid Khan (GT)

This Afghanistan bowler has been phenomenal this year with 24 wickets for 438 runs. His best this year (4/30) came against Mumbai Indians. There have been very few matches where could not take any wickets. One of them was against SRH on May 15 and the other was against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 29, when he went for 54 runs in four overs.

Mohammed Shami (GT)

Another entry from Hardik Pandya’s team, Mohammed Shami has also taken 24 wickets but for 424 runs. His fiery spell of 4/11 crushed Delhi Capitals (DC) and restricted them to 130. It’s a different story altogether that DC defended the score and won it by five runs. He is the only bowler in this list to take maiden overs. He has taken two maiden overs so far and secured three wickets five times.

Other names

The bowlers, who were in the run but would not be able to proceed further because their teams got eliminated, include Arshdeep Singh (PBKS), Mohammed Siraj (RCB), Varun Chakaravarthy (KKR) and Yuzvendra Chahal (RR).
