The government of Haryana changes school timings beginning November 15 in response to rising pollution and temperature drops

The Directorate of Education (DoE), Haryana has decided to revise the school timings across the state. The orders will be implemented on Wednesday, November 15. According to the revised timings, all single-shift schools in Haryana will function from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Meanwhile, the double-shift schools across the state will operate in two sessions. The first session is from 7:55 am to 12:30 pm while the second session will be from 12:40 pm to 5:15 pm.

The Haryana Education Department has sent a letter to all of the state’s district education officers and district fundamental officers, instructing them to put the policy into action. Every year on December 1, the dates alter, but the order arrived early this year.

The official handle of the Information, Public Relations, Languages & Culture Department, Govt of Haryana shared a post stating, “The Haryana Government has changed the timings of schools from November 15, 2023 and has fixed the timings of single shift schools from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. In double shift schools, the first shift will be from 7:55 am to 12:30 pm while the second shift will be from 12:40 pm to 5:15 pm”.

On the other hand, due to air pollution in the national capital, the December winter holidays for all schools has been postponed and will now take place from November 9 to November 18, according to a circular issued by the Delhi Directorate of Education on November 8. The circular added that more directives for the remainder of winter vacation would be issued in due course. Owing to the poor air quality, holidays were already declared from November 3 to November 10.

Due to severe pollution levels, the Delhi government has extended the closure of schools up to class 5 until Friday, November 10. Some schools in Noida have discontinued outdoor activities in favour of online lessons. Delhi is presently witnessing unprecedented levels of air pollution; which experts anticipate will last till the end of the week.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a measure of air pollution derived using data from five primary contaminants measured by air quality monitors.

The closure of the schools is a precautionary step taken to safeguard both students as well as teachers/staff health. The burning of post-harvest paddy straw has been a key cause to Delhi’s poor air quality.
