GT’s Shubman Gill smashes record third century in IPL, joins Virat Kohli in a unique list
One of the rising talents in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill and star player Virat Kohli have striking similarities across all three formats of the game, which are pretty hard to miss out on. In the second Qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gill scored 129 runs in 60 balls which put him in the second position after KL Rahul to score the highest runs by an Indian batsman in IPL history. Shubman Gill’s whirlwind knock made him only the second Indian batter after Virat Kohli (2016) and overall fourth in the history, after Jos Buttler (2022) and David Warner (2016), to score more than 800 runs in an IPL season.
Gill also surpassed Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 62-ball 124 to record the highest individual score this season, with Mumbai Indians being on the receiving end on both the occasions. In the process, the 23-year-old also surpassed RCB’s Faf du Plessis (730 runs) to claim the Orange Cap.
Additionally, Gill’s 129 bettered Virender Sehwag’s 122 against Chennai Super Kings in the 2014 season as the highest score for a batter in the IPL playoffs.
Shubman Gill became the second Indian to score three or more centuries in a single season after Kohli’s record 2016 outing where he had smashed four tons. Overall, he is the third batter with Jos Buttler in the list with four centuries as well in the 2022 season.
Shubman Gill hit a magnificent 104*(52) to power Gujarat Titans to a thrilling win and knock Royal Challengers out of the tournament at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Shubman Gill also became the second Indian batter to score 800 or more runs in a single season after Kohli’s tally of 973 runs in 2016.
Virat and Shubman have developed a knack for scoring centuries in the same match in 2023.
Both batters have struck a century against Sri Lanka in the ODI format specifically in the third match of the series in January this year.
While in the Test format, Shubman and Virat both struck a century in the same match against Australia in February.
Finally, in the T20 format, both players scored a century in the same match for different teams in the final group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.
In their recent encounter, Shubman’s century turned Virat’s (101*) futile as Gujarat Titans managed to clinch the victory by six wickets.
This loss knocked RCB out of the race of the IPL 2023 playoffs and allowed Mumbai Indians to end the group stage in the fourth position.
