The Yulla Kanda is a 12-km long trek.

As per legends, the lake, which is located at an altitude of 12,000 feet above sea level, was formed by the Pandavas.

Himachal Pradesh, a picturesque haven for travellers, boasts numerous breathtaking destinations that offer respite from the chaos of city life. Amidst its serene landscapes and lush valleys lies Kinnaur, one of the state’s most captivating districts. Known for its bountiful apple orchards, sprawling meadows, and enchanting pine forests, Kinnaur has much to offer. On of the draws of this region apart is the mystical Yulla Kanda Trek.

The Yulla Kanda Trek is a 12-kilometer expedition through the awe-inspiring mountains of Himachal Pradesh. What makes this journey truly magical is the panoramic view of the mountains, with the Krishna Temple nestled in the middle of a serene lake. Legend has it that this lake was created by the Pandavas during their exile in the Himalayas, and it sits at a breathtaking altitude of 12,000 feet above sea level.

The trek commences from the charming village of Yulla Khas. During the auspicious Janmashtami festivities, Kinnaur is filled with devotees from across the country who gather here to celebrate this sacred occasion. The trek itself is moderately challenging, and the best time to embark on this adventure is from mid-May to mid-November.

Multiple routes lead to this mesmerising trek. Starting from Kalpa, trekkers can choose to traverse either the Kashang Pass or the Listigarang Pass to reach the supposedly man-made lake. Devotees often circumambulate the lake as an act of atonement for their sins. Locals also hold a belief that if you attempt to float a traditional Kinnaur cap in the lake by inverting it, you can unveil insights into your destiny. The cap’s buoyancy or sinking supposedly foretells the year ahead, filled with either happiness and serenity or challenges.

What adds an extra layer of allure to this trek is the provision for setting up tents, allowing travellers to bask in the natural beauty and the crisp, rejuvenating mountain air.

In recent years, Himachal Pradesh has emerged as a popular destination not only for its scenic landscapes but also for its cultural and spiritual offerings. The Yulla Kanda Trek embodies the fusion of natural splendour and spirituality, making it an unforgettable experience for those seeking adventure and inner peace in the heart of Himachal Pradesh.
