Police have registered a case against a 30-year-old man from Jodhpur in Rajasthan for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 23-year-old woman student in Thane district, an official said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.

The woman student in Thane, also a native of Rajasthan who resided in Bhayander area, became friends with the accused after meeting him in Punjab where she had gone to take her pharmacy course exams.

During her stay there, the accused took her to a park and clicked a selfie with her. He later morphed the photo by superimposing the image of a `mangalsutra` (sacred necklace worn by married women) on her neck and told her she was now married to him, the official from Navghar police station said, reported PTI.

The man also blackmailed her, made advances towards her and threatened that if she failed to meet his demands, he would post the picture online.

The woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house here on December 24, 2023, the official said, reported PTI.

The police initially registered a case of accidental death.

Later, based on a complaint by the victim`s brother, the police on Saturday registered an FIR against the man under Indian Penal Code sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), the official said, reported PTI.

The FIR did not specify the reason for delay in filing of the complaint.

In another case, a case has been registered against a 37-year-old policeman for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife in Navi Mumbai township of Maharashtra, officials said on Sunday, reported PTI.

The 31-year-old victim got married to the accused, a resident of Kharghar area in Navi Mumbai and a sub-inspector with the CISF, on November 30, 2014 and the couple has two sons aged 7 and 3, they said, reported PTI.

The accused used to allegedly beat up his wife and ask for money from her parents. She once invested money in shares on her husband`s advice and incurred losses for which he blamed her, Kharghar police station`s senior inspector Rajeev Shejwal said, reported PTI.

The accused also wanted a land in her name and her bank accounts to be transferred to him and his family members and also threatened to divorce her, the police said quoting a complaint filed by the victim`s brother, reported PTI.

On May 3, 2024, the woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her house, the official said.

Initially, the police lodged a case of accidental death.

After a probe into the incident following the complaint, an FIR was registered on Friday against the accused under Indian Penal Code sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation), the official said.
