KOLKATA: Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar was smothered to death within hours of entering a triplex apartment in New Town area here on May 13. His body was then chopped into pieces in one of the washrooms, packed into bags and transported out, according to Kolkata Police and Bangladeshi investigators.
Before vacating the flat, the washroom was cleaned with acid to remove traces of the crime.CCTV footage collected from the apartment shows the murder suspects exiting with three big trolley bags and backpacks.
Aided by data from Bangladeshi security agencies, CID managed to stitch together sequence of events before & after the murder. However, they are yet to find the body parts, suspected to have been disposed at multiple spots.
The investigators learnt that persons involved in the crime are Bangladeshi nationals and have returned to their country after completing the job. Some had checked into a hotel in Chinar Park a day before the murder and checked out on May 17 and left the country the same day.
The plan to murder Azim, who represented Jhenaidah-4 in Khulna division of Bangladesh, was hatched at least a month ago. Prime accused in the case is businessman Md Akhtaruzzaman alias Shaheen, who is the younger brother of mayor of Kotchandpur municipality in Jhenaidah.
Shaheen paid the contract killers 4-crore Bangladeshi taka to kill the MP, and rented the New Town flat on April 25. On April 30, he moved into the flat with a woman and Aman, a member of a Left extremist organisation.
Shaheen left for Bangladesh on May 10, leaving Aman in-charge. Two hitmen from Bangladesh, Faisal Shaji and Mostafiz, reached Kolkata on May 11. On May 13, they picked the MP from his friend’s house in Sinthi and brought him to the flat, where he was smothered to death. Investigators suspect Shaheen, who returned to Dhaka two days prior to the murder, may have slipped into Nepal.
