The new guidelines are an attempt to streamline the education system in the state. The decision has come as a part of Assam’s adherence to the National Education Policy. The move will also ease the jittery transition of students from class 10 to higher education.

Under the new guidelines, there will be no separate matriculation examinations in the state. Instead of a board exam, class 10 students will be assessed by their teachers, including class unit tests, etc.

From now onwards, there will be no such examinations called Matriculation or Matric exams, said Chief Minister Sarma at a press conference. The prime focus of the assessment will be the pass-or-fail system within the school itself. The decision has been taken to ensure that students can easily start their preparation for class 11 and class 12 right after completing class 10 exams, he added.

Till now, there has been no official announcement about the organisation which will be formed by merging the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA). However, the merger is expected to streamline administrative processes and ensure holistic development of the students at the secondary and higher secondary levels.
