AGRA:

A 55-year-old professor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was booked under IPC section 354 — assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty — following a complaint by a 29-year-old PhD student on Sunday.
Taking cognisance of the matter, AMU proctor, Mohammad Waseem Ali, said, “The student had filed a complaint with the university and the police. The university is conducting an investigation and appropriate action will be taken based on the report findings.”
Narrating her ordeal in her complaint at the women police station in Aligarh, the student said, “I worked hard for my PhD programme in the past five years. I always got satisfactory remarks from the supervisor during my monthly fellowships. I made my PhD pre-submission six months ago which was also satisfactory. There were no remarks by the supervisor and other faculty members. But, once my draft thesis was ready, my supervisor informed me verbally that my thesis was not up to the mark for submission, and he won’t sign it.” She further said in her police complaint: “I tried my best to convince him, but instead he threatened me… Over the past five years during my PhD work, the supervisor made sexual advancements and overtures which I ignored. He would try to touch me inappropriately or start distasteful conversations. He would often praise either my clothes, lipstick or my body and tried to call me to the department at odd hours. I completely ignored his behaviour all this while since my focus was only on my thesis and I wanted to complete it…”
SHO of the women police station, Sarita Dwivedi, said, “A case has been registered in the matter and an investigation is being conducted.”
