A ‘rich person’s’ toy: MKBHD reviews Apple Vision Pro
If you are a technology enthusiast, you know who Marques Brownlee is. The renowned YouTube blogger has shared his view on the new Apple augmented reality (AR) / virtual reality (VR) headset – Vision Pro. In the 20-minute long review video, Brownlee says that he spent 30 minutes with the device. While he is impressed with the Apple Vision Pro, but he calls it a ‘rich person’s toy’ considering the hefty price tag of $3,499 (approx. ₹2,90,000).
Brownlee praises the eye tracking on the device which he says is the ‘most impressive thing’ on Apple Vision Pro. Calling the feature ‘magical’ and ‘surreal’, he says that Apple Vision Pro does well ‘anytime you move your eyes around the UI it would immediately highlight and select exactly what you’re looking at no matter how small the target was.’
Talking about the Optic ID, Brownlee says that it is basically ‘the fingerprint ID of the headset because it’s looking at your eyes.’ The frames on the device he says are not transparent but ‘it kind of looks like it’s a glass.’
‘Pass-through on Apple’s headset is again the best I’ve ever seen in a headset,’ he says in the review video. Apple Vision Pro is a pretty direct shot at Meta’s 1500 Quest Pro, he says.
The device runs on VisionOS – a whole new operating system which Brownlee says is ‘pretty similar to iPad OS.’ He was once again impressed by the UI. Being on a FaceTime call using Apple Vision Pro, Brownlee says, works okay but ‘not as good as obviously looking at a person.’
He was not impressed with the heavy weight of the Vision Pro. “I do wonder about using it for longer than the half hour that I did I wonder if it would be more fatiguing to my head,” he says.
Two hour battery life on the headset is not that great which, according to him is okay as ‘most people won’t be spending a lot of time in the headset.’
On the pricing front, Apple Vision Pro is unarguably a hefty device which Brownlee also says. But, he adds that there are several things that this headset does that no other headset does like the eye tracking and the hand tracking. Summarizing the review, Brownlee says that he was extremely impressed with the device ‘but at the end of the day this is not a product for the masses.’
