In just 28 days of April, the transport department registered over 8,000 cases of traffic violations on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, where six people were hurt after a pile-up on Thursday. Speeding is the top offence, followed by wrong-side parking and lane cutting, as per the official data. 

Of the 8,006 offences of various nature that we have registered in April so far this year, about 995 are of speeding, 983 of wrong side parking and 894 of lane cutting,” said Bharat Kalaskar, deputy transport commissioner (road safety cell) and transport officer.

The expressway has been seeing high registration of offences since the transport department launched a drive for road safety on December 1. Employees from regional transport offices (RTO) of Mumbai, Panvel, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have been working 24×7 with the help of NGOs, MRSDC and a number of road safety organisations.

“Between December 2022 and April 28, we have registered 40,909 cases of traffic violations, with the highest cases of speeding at 6,983, followed by 6,441 of lane cutting,” Kalaskar said.

The other violations include wrong side parking, driving without licence, lapsed fitness or insurance certificates and for invisible vehicle registration number, he added.

The figures are from RTO jurisdictions of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Panvel from where the expressway passes.

The Maharashtra government, which is preparing guidelines for the cab aggregators, has invited all stakeholders, including the public, to mail their suggestions to dycommr.enfl@gmail.com by May 9. “Taking into consideration the central government’s guidelines for Ola, Uber and other aggregator companies, the Maharashtra government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Sudhir Kumar Shrivastava, retired additional chief secretary, to draft the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Aggregator Rules. The committee is seeking inputs from all stakeholders in this regard,” a note from the transport department said.
