UPA put family first during 2008 global financial crisis: Nirmala Sitharaman in Lok Sabha
NEW DELHI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday criticised the UPA government for their handling of the 2008 global financial crisis, accusing the Congress party of prioritising their own interests over the nation’s economy, leading to India being labeled as part of the ‘fragile five.’
Sitharaman made these remarks while discussing the ‘White Paper’ on Indian economy and its impact on the lives of people of India in Lok Sabha during the budget session.She also highlighted the negative impact of the CommonWealth Games held during the UPA regime. In contrast, she praised the Narendra Modi government for earning global respect during India’s G20 presidency.
Opposition members Saugata Roy (TMC) and NK Premchandran expressed their disapproval of the White Paper by proposing substitute motions. Sitharaman emphasised that the Modi government’s sincere efforts had successfully lifted India’s economy out of the ‘fragile five’ and positioned it as one of the top five global economies. She further stated that India is on track to becoming one of the top three global economies.
Sitharaman stated, “The comparison shown in this ‘White Paper’ clearly demonstrates that when a government prioritizes the nation’s interests, works with sincerity and transparency, the results are evident for all to see.”
Sitharaman commended the Modi government’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis, describing it as more dedicated and sincere compared to the UPA’s response to the global financial crisis in 2008. She accused the UPA of lacking clean intentions.
Addressing the opposition members, Sitharaman stated, ‘The party that failed to handle the global financial crisis and was plagued by corruption and scandals is now attempting to lecture the Modi government.’ Despite interruptions from the opposition, Sitharaman urged them to provide a response instead of interrupting her speech.
