Congress slams Maharashtra government over delay in getting Wagh Nakh from London | India News
MUMBAI: Congress’s opposition leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Saturday hit out the Culture Affairs Minister Sudhir Munganthiwar over the apparent delay in getting the famed wagh nakh (a dagger looking like tiger claws) that was said to be used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to kill Afzal Khan from London to Mumbai. Wadettiwar said that Mungantiwar had claimed that the Wagh Nakh would arrive in November 2023 but it hadn’t arrived even in January 2024.
“November is gone, January is gone, Where did the Wagh Nakh reach? You (Mungantiwar) went to London for tourism to bring in tiger claws by beating drums at the airport in a pompous way, by advertising from the government coffers. However, he came back empty-handed.After that you (Munganthiwar) said that tiger claws will come in November, that month passed….. year is over, 2024 has dawned.. now we have missed January and the Wagh Nakh did not come… Will you go back to London now or will you give the next date?” Wadettiwar said in a post on X.
In October last year, the Maharashtra government on signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with London’s Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum to get back the famed wagh nakh (a dagger looking like tiger claws) that was said to be used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to kill Afzal Khan. Munganthiwar was in London to sign the MoU. The V&A had said in a statement to TOI that the formalities will soon be completed and based on current timelines, the tiger claws would travel to India by June next year. The MoU set out the ‘details of a three-year loan agreement for a unique pair of tiger claws in the V&A collection’, the V&A said in its statement. Industries Minister Uday Samant was also present for the MoU signing.
According to a state Government Resolution (GR) issued by the Maharashtra Cultural Affairs department, the (V&A) Museum is giving the wagh nakh to the Maharashtra government on loan for three years. Munganthiwar had said that the wagh nakh will be brought to Mumbai in November 2023.
