India has “conveyed a request with relevant supporting documents to the government of Pakistan” to extradite 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind and LeT founder Hafiz Saeed, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said Friday.

Addressing a press briefing, Bagchi said Saeed is wanted in numerous cases in India and is also a UN-proscribed terrorist.

“We have conveyed a request along with relevant supporting documents to the Government of Pakistan to extradite him to India to face trial in a particular case,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson said.

India has been flagging the issue of activities that Saeed is wanted for, Bagchi said, adding that “This is a recent request…”

Pakistan-based Geo News channel on Wednesday (27 December, 2023) reported that New Delhi has demanded Islamabad for handing over Saeed, who was detained in 2019 by Pakistani authorities in connection with charges of terror financing.

He has been convicted and sentenced in at least five cases of terror financing since 2020.

Sources to News18 said a Letter of Rogatory has been sent to Pakistan and has Hafiz Saeed’s name as the accused in several NIA cases, including terror attacks and funding of terror groups in Kashmir.

India has repeatedly demanded Saeed’s extradition to face trial for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, but there has been complication in the process as both the countries do not have an extradition treaty.
