World Universal Health Coverage Day 2023: After the COVID-19 pandemic hit us, the need for universal health coverage has increased as the existing inequalities have reached new heights.

UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE DAY 2023: The World Universal Health Coverage Day, observed on December 12 annually, serves as a global call for equal and accessible healthcare. Conceived by the United Nations, the core idea of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is that everyone, regardless of their location or economic status, should have access to quality healthcare without facing financial burdens. Aligned with SDG target 3.8, UHC aims to deliver comprehensive healthcare services, financial protection, and coverage for both the population and healthcare providers.

On UHC day, we reaffirm building resilient health systems, reducing disparities in global health, and ensuring that no one is left behind in their pursuit of well-being.

World Universal Health Coverage Day: History

On December 12, 2012, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution urging nations to accelerate their efforts towards achieving universal healthcare (UHC). The primary developmental objective was to ensure that everyone, regardless of their location, has access to high-quality and affordable healthcare. In 2017, the United Nations officially designated December 12th as International Universal Health Coverage Day.

World Universal Health Coverage Day: Significance

World Health Coverage Day serves as an annual call for diverse stakeholders to raise awareness of strong and resilient health systems. On this day, advocates inform the stories of millions still awaiting access to health services, celebrate the progress made thus far, and call on leaders to make large investments in health. It is a global effort and a crucial milestone towards the 2030 Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goal.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the connection between UHC and health security. A health system that works for everyone, both in times of calm and crisis, is an essential requirement for effective health systems. The pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities and financial burdens, thus, highlighting the importance of achieving UHC soon.
