The honourable Prime Minister, on Friday, August 5, lauded long jumper Murali Sreeshankar for winning sliver in the men’s long jump at the Commonwealth Games in 2022. On Thursday, the 23-year-old Sreeshankar finished second after his best jump of 8.08m.

For most of the finals, the Young Turk was nowhere in contention to earn a medal, but he was able to turn his fortunes around. On his fifth attempt, he put forth his best effort and finished on the podium.

Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas ran away with the gold medal. Like Sreeshankar, Nairn also had a best jump of 8.08m, but his second best of 7.98m was better than that of Sreeshankar’s 7.84m. South Africa’s Jovan van Vuuren won the bronze medal with a best jump of 8.06 metres.

After the youngster scripted history, PM Modi heaped praise on him and said that the future of India in athletics is pretty bright.

The Prime Minister took to Twitter and wrote, “M. Sreeshankar’s Silver medal at the CWG is a special one. It is after decades that India has won a medal in Men’s long jump at the CWG. His performance augurs well for the future of Indian athletics. Congratulations to him. May he keep excelling in the times to come.”

Sreeshankar’s performance in the CWG was the best for India men’s in the history of the championship. Way back in 1978, Suresh Babu won a bronze medal.

Among women, Anju Bobby George and Prajusha Maliakkal won bronze and silver in 2002 and 2010 respectively.
