Manchester United agrees to sign Chelsea’s midfielder Mason Mount in $69 million deal
Manchester United gave a green signal to midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea in a deal worth £55 million ($69 million), news agencies reported on Thursday. The agreement negotiations which was ongoing since the conclusion of the Premier League season was finally confirmed on Thursday, people with knowledge of the matter said.
Mason Mount has been granted authorization to proceed with a medical examination and conclude negotiations regarding his personal conditions, as the involved clubs prepare to finalize the necessary documentation. Mason Mount will officially commit to Manchester United by signing a contract that extends until 2028, and there is also an additional year as an optional extension.
The people who spoke on the condition of anonymity added that the deal includes further payments of around $6.3 million, but it the payout will depend upon meeting certain targets.
Contentious deal
After Manchester United had cautioned Chelsea that they were unwilling to exceed their enhanced bid of £50 million plus an additional £5 million, Chelsea responded with a counter-offer of £58 million plus an extra £7 million in potential additional payments, news platform The Athletic said.
However, discussions between the two clubs recommenced earlier this week and seem to have ultimately resulted in a favorable resolution for all involved parties.
Mason Mount’s Chelsea contract was due to expire next year and if the deal goes through his entry would provide Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag with additional midfield choices, strengthening the team’s overall options in that area.
Mason’s magic
Mason Mount, who emerged from the lower tiers of Chelsea’s system, exhibited his prowess by netting 27 goals and delivering 22 assists in 129 Premier League matches for the club. Having tasted success as a member of Chelsea’s Champions League-winning squad in 2021, the 24-year-old has also earned 36 international appearances for England, including a starring role in the Euro 2020 final loss against Italy.
However, his performance declined and he faced difficulties due to injury last season, managing to score only three goals in the Premier League.
