Mumbai, adjoining areas to observe dry days on voting days, check details
Liquor shops in Mumbai and its adjoining areas including Thane, Kalyan and Palghar will be shut on the voting days for Lok Sabha elections 2024, sources said.
Mumbai is scheduled to vote on Monday, May 20.
A dry day is scheduled for May 18–20 in Mumbai due to the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls, sources added.
On May 20, Maharashtra`s most important constituencies—Mumbai, Palghar, Kalyan, and Thane will go to vote and there will be dry days for these constituencies.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated that the constituency hosting the poll, along with the neighboring constituencies, adhere to these “dry days.” This policy guarantees a calm and equitable electoral process in `sensitive` areas as well, sources say.
Mumbai`s bars and wine stores will close at five o`clock on May 18 and reopen at five o`clock on May 20. In order to preserve public order on election day, all wine shops and bars will be closed.
On June 4, one more dry day in Mumbai is likely while the votes are counted and the results are announced.
Mumbai Police has also been planning extensive security arrangements in the city for the voting day.
Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai police has began its preparations for voting. Navi Mumbai Police said that they had prepared a force of 3,500 to 4,000 officers for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the city.
This deployment is part of security measures being taken by the police, which include assemblies including as Airoli and Belapur.
Thane and 12 other Maharashtra seats, including six in Mumbai, will be contested in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on May 20.
According to a report, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambhe confirmed that comprehensive security measures had been put in place, including preparation meetings and the arrival of six armed battalions. The deployment consists of around 3,500 to 4,000 police officers, including officials, who have been strategically allocated for `bandobust` activities.
Furthermore, vigorous operations have been performed under each police station, resulting in the seizure of illegal firearms, narcotics, and contraband. Bharambhe encouraged folks to use their voting rights without fear.
