A police personnel on Wednesday said that a 40-year-old man with a criminal record attacked a team of Mumbai Police who went to arrest him. The official said that the history-sheeter was being arrested by the cops in a molestation case. 

According to a report in PTI, a group of police officials from Borivali police station, after having gathered inputs, went to Ratnabai Chawl in the western suburb to nab the accused. The accused, identified as Mahesh Mohan Shetty alias Kolu, was booked for an alleged molestation last year. 

However, the accused Shetty became violent with the cops. He kicked a constable named Swapnil Sharad Pawar and also attacked him with a stone creating a commotion in the area, the official told PTI. In a turn of events, the police overpowered Shetty and he was later taken to the Borivali police station. 

Shetty has been booked under Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Mumbai Police Act. 

Shetty alias Kolu faces multiple serious charges like kidnapping and rape. Reportedly, he was earlier externed from the limits of the Mumbai Police`s zone-11 which includes western suburbs like Goregaon, Borivali and Kandivali, the report stated. 

Reportedly, a similar incident happened in the South Mumbai area of the city wherein a cop was attacked by a history-sheeter with a blade when a police team had gone to arrest him. The incident happened in the Cuffe Parade area of the city. According to the reports, a police sub-inspector was injured in the attack. 

According to the police officials, the personnel attached to Cuffe Parade police station received information about an accused in the 2021 murder case at the World Trade Centre. When the officials went there to arrest him, he took out a blade and threatened to kill the officer if he went closer to him. He later struck him nearly four times causing multiple injuries on the cop`s hand. 

However, the accused was held and booked for causing hurt to a public servant and for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty. He was later sent to a mental asylum in Thane stating that he was mentally disturbed.
