As many as seven fishermen were rescued from a sinking boat in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Maharashtra`s Raigad district, an official from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said on Sunday, the PTI reported on Sunday.

The remains of the boat that sank on August 17 were found washed up on the shore of Diveagar in Raigad district this morning, the official said.

The incident took place near Dighi Adgaon around 4 pm on Thursday (August 17), when a crew of seven fishermen had ventured nine miles into the sea on their boat “Bana Sagar”, he said.

As the boat started sinking, two trawlers from Gujarat, which were in the vicinity, rescued the seven fishermen, the official said.

The crew was safely brought out by the time the coast guard reached the scene, he said.

The sinking boat, however, could not be salvaged on that day. It was found washed up on the shore of Diveagar on Sunday morning, the official said.

Earlier this month, a boat carrying three fishermen reportedly capsized in the Arabian sea off the Versova coast in Mumbai, officials had earlier said, the PTI had reported on August 6.

In the incident one of the fishermen was killed and another went missing, while the third person swam to safety, an official had told the PTI.

The trio set out in the boat for fishing from Devachiwadi in Versova area between 8 pm and 9 pm on Saturday, he had said.

The boat overturned, about two-three km from the seashore, the official said quoting local people and police.

One of the three persons, identified as Vijay Bamania (35), swam to safety, he had said.

The official said as per local people, the other two persons were identified as Usmani Bhandari (22) and Vinod Goel (45).

“The body of Vinod Goel was found on Sunday afternoon during the search operation while Usmani Bhandari is missing,” a Mumbai Fire Brigade official had said.

He said the search operation was suspended post-afternoon due to high tides.

Various agencies including Fire Brigade, police, the Navy, lifeguards and a helicopter were involved in the search operation.
